Bionisphere: The Biomimetic House
In cooperation with Bionikum Austria, the Carinthia University of Applied Sciences is planning to realize a biomimetic house that incorporates design principles from nature. The building will be build in Villach, Austria, and the project lifecycle is projected for 10 years. During these 10 years the building will further be optimized. The core principles of the building are energy efficiency, the utilization of recyclable materials, embedding into nature and using closed energy and material circuits.

Here are a few properties of the proposed building:
- Flexible architecture: Rooms can change in size; Building size can be extended by adding modules
- Building envelope will be inspired by folding mechanisms in nature
- Utilization of natural materials and technical textiles
- Natural lighting and light guidance systems for energy efficiency
- A minimum of 90% recyclability of the building’s materials at the end of its life cycle
- Utilization of self cleaning surfaces
- Temperature regulation by the building‘s architecture (e.g. changing surface properties of the walls, etc.)
- Tensile water technology for water transport and heat exchange (design without heat pumps etc.)
- Energy generation via photovoltaics and solar collectors
